microsoftInstall Docker: Windows Server

Windows Server

To run a Windows container, you must have a supported container runtime available on your machine. The runtimes currently supported on Windows are Mobyarrow-up-right, the Mirantis Container Runtimearrow-up-right, and containerdarrow-up-right.

This section shows you how to install each runtime on a VM that runs Windows Server. For the Moby and containerd runtimes, you can use PowerShell scripts to complete the installation in a few steps.

Docker Community Edition (Docker CE) provides a standard runtime environment for containers. The environment offers a common API and command-line interface. The framework and components of Docker CE are managed by the open-source community as part of the Moby Projectarrow-up-right.

To get started with Docker on Windows Server, use the following command to run the install-docker-ce.ps1arrow-up-right PowerShell script. This script configures your environment to enable container-related OS features. The script also installs the Docker runtime.

PowerShellCopy

Invoke-WebRequest -UseBasicParsing "https://raw.githubusercontent.com/microsoft/Windows-Containers/Main/helpful_tools/Install-DockerCE/install-docker-ce.ps1" -o install-docker-ce.ps1
.\install-docker-ce.ps1
